Martin Bell

Teacher, Cultural Literacy and Classic Film
Coates Hall 103 (210) 564-6277 m.bell@tmi-sa.org
Martin Bell came to TMI in 2005, after retiring from a business career. He taught previously in a GED program through San Antonio College and substituted at Communcations Arts and Health Careers high schools.
Mr. Bell earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Texas at Austin and has taken a lifelong interest in the arts.
At TMI, he has taught English Workshop and currently teaches Cultural Literacy and Classic Film, both electives in the History Department for Upper School students. He also has been faculty sponsor of TMI’s Film Club.
“What I like most about TMI is that so many people, students and faculty, are consistently doing their best,” he says.
Mr. Bell developed the curricula for both of his current courses himself. Cultural Literacy is a survey of art and music appreciation that starts with the ancient Greeks and goes through Expressionism and Cubism, while Classic Film covers a selection of important sound films from “Citizen Kane” through “Blade Runner.”
Teaching both courses gives him a chance to “introduce students to the things I love,” says Mr. Bell. “I feel I’m an ambassador or an advocate for culture, giving my students time to look thoughtfully at art and to listen with attention to music.”
Often seen in TMI’s Helen and Everett Jones Library, Mr. Bell continues to research and to update the material he presents in Cultural Literacy and Classic Film. “I continue to build insights every time I go over the material,” he says. “Looking critically at art and music and film is never-ending. Because our judgment of art is subjective, it changes.”
